Isaiah 55:10-11
For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
….and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
….giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
….it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
….and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
God’s Word will work its work. It was God’s word that called the creation into being. It was God’s word that set Noah to work on an ark and promised to renounce God’s archer’s bow. It was God’s word that summoned Abraham out from his kindred and his father’s house to a land unknown and a future unexpected. It was God’s word that sent Moses out from the burning bush back to the land of his shame and forced pharaoh to surrender his slaves. It was God’s word that shaped a people at Sinai, raised up David, tore down a nation corrupted, and summoned them back from exile. It was God’s word that brought judgment and mercy, forming a people like fire and a hammer that cuts the building blocks of a temple and city.
God’s word will work its work. It will tear down what is false and raise up what is true. It will reveal our brokenness and lift the burden of our sins. It will speak the words of healing and grace that set free the captive heart. It will open unseeing eyes and strengthen hands to serve.
God’s word will work it’s work, as surely as winter rains carve the Grand Canyon, set deserts to bloom, and give bread to the eater.
God’s word will work its work in the world. God’s word will work its work in us.
O Font of Life and Way of Truth,
turn us ever to yourself
that your Word may bear its fruit in us.
