This blog consists of a series of daily verses and brief reflections for the Advent and Lenten seasons to encourage a deeper focus on Christian faith and life in those special seasons that prepare us for the focal celebrations of the Christian year: The mystery of the incarnation celebrated at Christmas and mystery of redemption observed during The Three Days (the Paschal Triduum) from Maundy Thursday, through Good Friday, into Easter.
These are materials developed for our use at Los Altos Lutheran Church, but are available to all. We retain the rights to the content of the reflections but they may be used by individual congregations by acknowledging their source.
The current them for Advent 2017 takes up the image of doorways: A Doorway to Hope, A Doorway to Peace, A Doorway to Joy, A Doorway to Light. Information about that theme can be found in the message for the First Sunday in Advent that is posted here at our blog site Watching for the Morning.

The themes in previous years:
“…Love Justice…Do Kindness…Walk Humbly…” (Micah 6:8) with a special focus on The Lord’s Prayer under the title “The Justice and Peace of the Lord’s Prayer”.
Our weekly foci were
- “Our Father”
- “Your name be holy”
- “Your will be done”
- “As we forgive”
- “Lead us not into temptation”
On Sundays during Lent our worship is followed by a soup luncheon and conversation time on themes related to our observance of the Lenten season. The topics for “Sunday Soup” this year were:
- Listening Well
- Speaking Truly
- Seeing Clearly
- Acting Kindly
- Walking Together
In a time as divided as ours it is important that the Christians seek to be agents of reconciliation and witnesses to the biblical vision of a human community governed by the Spirit of God who “loved us and gave himself up for us“.
