If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Older translations said we should walk in the Spirit – or by the Spirit. The New International Version says we should keep in step with the Spirit. And the New Revised Standard Version quoted above says to be guided by the Spirit. They are trying to capture the nuance of this word that expresses not just the notion of traveling, but traveling somewhere. It carries notions of walking in a line, even of troops marching. There is another word for wandering around, like Jesus traveling the countryside from place to place. But the Spirit wants to lead us somewhere. The Spirit wants to conform us into the image of Christ. The Spirit wants to make us children of that Life and Love that cannot perish.
The Spirit wants the will of God to be embodied in us – compassion, fidelity, courage, endurance, hope, and, above all, love. It is no small thing to pray. “Thy will be done.”
