1 Corinthians 8:6

There is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

From God and for God

It is a feature of Christian Faith that while there are many ‘gods’ (things in which we place our hope and trust) there is only one ‘God’, one ultimate source of life and grace. How exactly we should think and talk about God, however, is a matter for some humility. We confess that the truth of God is revealed in Jesus, but even here humility is required. We are not declaring that the Christian team is the only true team; we are asserting that the heart of God is sacrificial love. And if the heart of God is sacrificial love, then there is no room to act or speak apart from that love.

We are all created from that heart of God and for that God of heart. We are created in love and for love. It is why St. Augustine prays: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” God is the mountain stream and we the salmon that have only one home in him.

But this is not a story of one fish; it is the story of the whole sea. All creation has its home in the heart of God. And so we are not only sisters and brothers to one another; we are sisters and brothers to the field and stream, to the mountains and seas, to all the rich abundance of life that is born of the heart and breath of God.
