And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
By August where I lived in Michigan, everyone was trying to give away Zucchini. We had zucchini bread nearly every week during the coffee hour after worship. People would send zucchini home with the pastor, with the secretary, with the youth minister. Now that I am in California it’s oranges. Abundance overflows. It overflows on your children, on your neighbors, on your workmates, on complete strangers.
The word ‘righteousness’ in the world of the scripture means fulfilling your obligations to God and to others. It is about giving honor where honor is due and kindness where kindness is due. It is about remembering the ties that bind us to God and to one another – and honoring them. It is similar to the meaning of the word ‘love’, though love goes further: recognizing your neighbor as a member of your home and treating them as you would treat yourself. A “harvest of righteousness” is a little like zucchini. It is overflowing love.
