Ephesians 5:8

For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.

Being light

To say that God enlightens us, means not just that God gives us understanding of God’s way, or that God gives light to our path; God makes us to be children of light.

It is the word and the Spirit that are the tools of this re-creation. By God’s word, we mean not simply the text of the scripture but the living voice that speaks to us through the scripture. The letter of the law is different than the Spirit of the Law. The outward observance of “do not kill” is different than a heart that wishes no harm on others. God is speaking to us, encountering us, addressing our hearts and lives through the scripture. This living word is the scalpel of the Spirit, the sharp two-edged sword that reveals what we do not wish to see, and helps us see what we could not guess – reveals our sins and brokenness and opens our eyes to God’s wondrous mercy. Once we were darkness, but now – in the Lord – we are light. Once we were dead in our trespasses but not we are alive in Christ. Once we were far off, but now we have been brought near. Once we were no people but now we are God’s people. Fabulous mercy. New Creation. Enlightened.

So live as children of light. Live the Christ who is in us. Live the imperishable life to which we have been raised with Christ. Bear the fruit of the light, what is good and right and true.

If you were adopted by John D. Rockefeller you would become a Rockefeller. You would receive all the benefits of that great name, and receive its fabulous inheritance. You would also have the risks and responsibilities of having that family name. We have been adopted into Christ – with its profound inheritance, its risks, and its great and noble responsibilities. And so comes the wondrous declaration: “Once you were not light and now you are light.” And the injunction: “Live as children of light.” And the reminder: “the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true.”
