Ephesians 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.

Holy and blameless

The language of being chosen “before the foundation of the world” is the language of love. As lovers say “We were made for each other,” so faith sees the grace and love of God stretches beyond space and time. Such language is an expression of joy rather than data for an argument about predestination and free will. God’s immeasurable love begins before I was born. Indeed, love filled the heart of God before anything was called into being.

From the beginning it was in the heart of God that we should be holy. Not pious, understand. Not churchy. Not excessively religious. But God’s own sons and daughters, free of sin and shame, who love God and one another with our whole hearts. That’s the holiness for which we were created. It is the holiness for which we are destined. And this is the work of the Spirit within us: that we might be holy – loving God and all people with hearts made whole and pure.
