Isaiah 64:8

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

Clay

When we speak of God as creator we are speaking not just of what happened long ago in the mists of time. God is more than the author of the big bang. God’s creating is ongoing. God daily upholds the universe and summons it forward. God has made us and is making us. We are clay in the hands of the eternal potter.

There is a certain resignation in the prophet’s words – as though the people had no right to complain at what had happened to them because they are but clay. But we are God’s clay; we are being fashioned into something, not left to clot the soil. The world is being carried forward towards the New Jerusalem. And we are being carried forward into the image of Christ.
