Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
The LORD is the everlasting God
The prophet’s claim is not that we are created – every people believed that the world was created. The prophet’s claim is that it is the LORD who is the everlasting God. It is the God of the Exodus and Sinai who is the creator of every bit of soil and sand and sea to the very furthest limits of all that is.
Israel is scattered among the nations. Jerusalem is destroyed. The people live now in lands where other deities are named. Many are in Babylon, the center of power at that moment in the ancient world. But there is nowhere life can take them, says the prophet, where the LORD is not the everlasting God and Creator.
And it is the LORD who is creator. The source and power at the heart of all things is the defender of widows and orphans, the protector of the unprotected, the one who sets free those who are bound and summons the world to justice and compassion.
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God.”
